Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff has called off an official trip to the U-S. The decision was made due to Washington's escalating spying activities on the Latin American nation and Rousseff's personal communication. .
To counter this threat, Argentine Defense Minister Agustin Rossi and his Brazilian counterpart Celso Amorim met recently in Buenos Aires to improve bilateral cyber defense capabilities.
Although the administration of the U-S president Barack Obama is busy with the events in the Middle East, experts say Washington still has its eyes on the Latin American countries. They say the recent row between Bolivia and the U-S over the diversion of president Eva Morales' plane on the suspicion that he was carrying the whistleblower Edward Snowden has deepened the mistrust the U-S and Latin America.
Argentina's Rossi and Brazil's Amorim are expected to meet again by the end of this year in Brasilia to "intensify" joint efforts against US cyber-espionage.
When the espionage controversy came to light, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was one of the first regional leaders to publicly condemn the U-S spying programs. "I felt a shiver going down my spine when I learnt they are spying on us from the north", Kirchner said the same day she attended Argentina's official Independence Day celebrations back in July.
